Tavira - Cultural Venues and Facilities

Arquivo Municipal (Municipal Archive)
Located in the historical city centre, the Municipal Archive offers various services including a reading room, support library, and consultation and copying of documents, amongst others.
Housed in what was once the old city jail, the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library was inaugurated recently. Amongst the services offered are free Internet access, reading and multimedia areas for adults and children, reprographic services, a cafeteria, a garden and an auditorium.
Palácio da Galeria (Municipal Museum)
Probably built in the 16th century, the palace is situated inside the castle walls. This lovely building, which currently functions as the Municipal Museum, is easily reached by going through the D. Manuel gate and taking the side street to the left of the Igreja da Misericórdia (Mercy Church).
Be sure to go inside and visit the palace, where a variety of exhibitions can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Guided tours of the facility and art workshops are also available.
Casa de Artesanato (Handicraft Workshop)
At this facility, run by the Association Artes e Sabores de Tavira (Arts and Flavours of Tavira - ASTA), one may observe the production techniques used to make the various handicrafts produced in the municipality.
Centro de Ciência Viva (Living Science Centre)
This is an interactive museum-style facility where the main themes are water and energy. A number of experiments and activities relating to these themes are carried out here.
Observatório Astronómico (Astronomy Observatory)
Located at Sítio do Malhão in Santo Estevão, the astronomy study centre’s main aim is to promote and publicise the study of astronomy. Its main activities are intended to educate and disseminate scientific knowledge and have as their basis the observation of the stars in the night sky depending on the season. Visits can be made both during the day and at night but must be booked in advance.
Torre de Tavira (Tavira Tower)
Located next to the Church of Our Lady of the Castle, Tavira Tower is a covered observatory that operates inside the old city water reservoir. From here, you can enjoy a stunning 360º view over the entire natural and cultural heritage of the municipality from a viewpoint almost a hundred metres above sea level. Visits are accompanied by a guide who will give you lots of information on everything you see before you. |
