The night is wonderful, encouraging us to stay and take a wander down to the sea or perhaps go up to the lighthouse and take a look at the lights of the hamlets along the coastline reflected in the sea. A campsite amidst the pine trees endorses the suggestion.
To get here, all you have to do is catch one of the boats which depart regularly from Tavira quay or from Quatro Águas.
Praia da Terra Estreita or Santa Luzia
A short stretch of sand whose size in no way detracts from its beauty. One can enjoy some pleasantly tranquil moments here, as this is a quiet beach with little noise and activity. It is actually an extension of the beach at Tavira Island, so a stroll between the two is a possibility.
The beach can be reached using the boats that cross the estuary from Santa Luzia.
Praia do Barril
On arrival in Santa Luzia, take the road that crosses the town and once you reach Pedras d’el Rei you’ll soon come across the signpost for Praia do Barril.
The path leading to the sea takes you through the estuary, the marshes and, farther on, the dunes. It is a true pleasure to discover natural surroundings such as these. Along the way, as you draw closer to the sea, whether you take the picturesque train or go on foot, you will feel the sea breeze whilst watching Santa Luzia retreat into the distance. The birds, the pine trees and the inhabitants of the marshes will undoubtedly be your companions along the way. When you reach the beach, take the opportunity to admire the unique architecture of the old fishermen’s houses there, some of which have been converted into pleasant eateries offering delicious meals. Old anchors that were once used for tuna fishing can be seen laid out side by side in the dunes. Stroll down to the sea, which has been patiently awaiting you and enjoy.
Praia do Homem Nu
If you’re already at Praia do Barril and are a fan of naturism, don’t hesitate. Head off in a westerly direction and you’ll find a naturist beach.
Ilha de Cabanas
Opposite the hamlet of Cabanas, this delightful island is well worth a visit.
Spend the whole day here. Go to Cabanas, catch one of the fishermen’s boats that you’ll find waiting for you at the floating quay and head off to this attractive sandy beach. A bit like Santa Luzia, you’ll find this beach has a quieter atmosphere. The clear waters call out to you. Dive in; you’ll find they offer relief when the breeze gets a bit too hot.
Back at Cabanas after such an enjoyable day, have a seat, relax at one of the pavement cafés facing the estuary and sample the bounty that the estuary you are now admiring has to offer: oysters, baby clams and clams, to name just a few.
Praia do Lacém
This is perhaps the quietest of all the municipality’s beaches, partly because people often don’t notice the access to it, and also because of its rural setting and the dense vegetation surrounding it.
The estuary’s flora and fauna are even more in evidence at this beach, making it the ideal choice for anyone wanting to set off to discover the Ria Formosa.
On arrival, you’ll come across a channel of the estuary that can be crossed on foot at low tide, leading you over to the beach that stretches out on the other bank with its strikingly white sands, clear waters and tranquil atmosphere.
